Gastronomy 2025

Catalonia will be the World Region of Gastronomy in 2025. It will thus become the first European region to receive this distinction.

The recognition confirms the consolidation of an innovative and regenerative tourism model where the gastronomic revolution in Catalonia goes far beyond the restaurant and opens the doors to discovering the territory and local and unique food production.

The World Region of Gastronomy is an initiative promoted by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), a non-profit institute that has been working with consortia of regional entities and agents in the field of gastronomy, culture, arts and tourism since 2010. It has the global experience of a global network of experts and collaborates with specialized intergovernmental organizations.

Catalonia is a benchmark in food and gastronomic excellence, a leader in wine and food tourism. Catalonia has a cuisine that speaks of history, landscapes, the people who inhabit them, their customs, life, present and future. Being a World Region of Gastronomy is a great opportunity to continue explaining ourselves at home and to the world.

For this reason, the Generalitat of Catalonia, together with all the agents adhering to the distinction, assume the commitment to:

TERRITORY

Promote the heritage linked to gastronomy and agri-food landscapes, while promoting their social, environmental and economic sustainability that makes them possible, as well as the major country routes that contribute to the cohesion and dynamization of the entire territory.

TRADITION

Promote Catalan Cuisine, from tradition and innovation as one of the elements of uniqueness and identity of our country and at the same time a contribution to the world, highlighting our food system associated with the great diversity and richness of products, the quality, responsibility and variety of landscapes that make it up.

Identity

Promote a story highlighting the entire chain, from farming, fishermen, the entire production sector and local products to chefs, restaurants, markets, schools and training centers, research and innovation... recognizing the unique and unique features that make up the contribution of Catalan gastronomy to the world.

Regenerative tourism

Commit to a change of model towards regenerative and quality food and wine tourism, which adds value to the community, associated with an agri-food production model rooted in and committed to the territory and, therefore, a new economic model that is respectful of both the community and the culture and natural environment that hosts it.

CULTURE

To work so that the citizens of Catalonia become the prescribers and consumers of the products that our land and the Mediterranean Sea give us, through the effort that farmers, fishermen, food artisans and the entire set of our production system put into it. We will also work to improve infrastructures, spaces and tasting and information services.

Promote the professionalization of the sector to continue on the path of internationalization and openness to the world, from our products, dishes and ways of cooking and enjoying food.

Continuing the gastronomic revolution started at the time by Ferran Adrià and the Michelin-starred chefs, with new innovative forms of gastronomic experience.
